Overall Aims

We enable York residents of all ages, abilities and life to walk, wheel and ride as the natural way to get around York, while improving wellbeing, community life, green spaces, and tackling inequalities and the climate and nature crises.

We work to the following values – we respond to need, we are inclusive, we are professional and effective, we innovate and continually improve, we make positive change happen, and we are constructive and cooperative.

Walk, wheel and ride with us into a healthy, green and kind future!

Objective 1

We increase walking, wheeling and cycling and reduce car use. We tackle the climate crisis.

By 2026, we will secure sustainable income, capacity and resources to continue our programme of walking, cycling and nature activities until 2030, and beyond. We will continue our successful projects – Start Cycling with Cake Confidence, Cycling Without Age Rides for care homes and the community, Take the Green Route! Nature Walks, Rides and Workshops and our Walking Book Group.

We aim to deliver at least 100 activities for 500 people each year, working with 30 long-term staff and volunteers and 20+ delivery partners.

Objective 2

We improve health and wellbeing in York residents of all ages, abilities and life situations. We tackle health inequalities and ensure our activities are inclusive and accessible to all.

Over 80% of people involved in our programme of walking, cycling and nature activities will report improved health and wellbeing.

Over 80% of people will be from groups experiencing disadvantage who are more likely to be marginalised and vulnerable and/ or underrepresented groups. This will include women and girls, older and elder people (aged 50+), people living with mental and physical health challenges and/or disabilities, refugees and asylum seekers, and people on lower incomes.

Objective 3

We connect York residents with nature as they walk, wheel and ride around the city. We tackle the nature crisis.

We will hold regular inclusive nature activities. We will ensure residents of all ages and abilities can access nature and enjoy nature connection to improve and sustain their health and wellbeing. We will improve the biodiversity of York’s green spaces and create new biodiverse “Wilder Spaces”.

We will continue to embed environmental sustainability at the heart of our work and carry out sound environmental business practices.

Objective 4

We improve community life by providing regular sociable opportunities for a wide range of people to come together in the community. We aim to hold at least 100 activities for 500 people each year.

We also improve community life by training, supporting and working with staff, volunteers and University interns from the York community.

We will work with a sustainable YBB Team of 30 long-term staff and volunteers. We will offer a package of skills training to our Team, including Safeguarding and working with Adults at Risk, First Aid, Accessible Walk and Ride Leading, Cycle Skills Training, Digital Skills, Nature Wellbeing and Wildlife Gardening.

Objective 5

York Bike Belles CIC is sustainable and resilient. We leave a sustainable legacy.

We will continue to grow our internal capacity, knowledge and skills. We will invest in training and develop more volunteers to enable us to continue our successful activities. We will build more community support and continue to develop positive mutually-beneficial partnerships. We will secure low cost, permanent storage for our community bike fleet. We will develop more legacy digital resources and freely share any experience and learning from our work.

We will continue to improve our Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact Reporting. We will continually seek and implement feedback, and publish an Annual Involvement Survey and Organisational Impact Report. We will continue an internal Resilience Development role to help us to secure ongoing income from a diversity of sources.

This will enable us to sustainably continue our programme of walking, cycling and nature activities until 2030, and beyond.
