Enjoy quality time outdoors with your cycling family! 

Have fun and get confident on bikes together – discover the best routes, learn new skills, meet other families and explore the great outdoors!

New for 2018 is a free and fun programme of activities and support for Cycling Families – one of York’s fastest-growing cycling communities. We’ve got everything you need to get confident and independent as a family on bikes – tailored information and advice, family Bike Curious tryout events, Dr Bike sessions, #travelwithtots bike loans, bike maintenance workshops, family social rides, and more!

We will focus on schools and the community in the the Acomb area in July/ August with a launch and engagement event at Carr Schools on 4 July.

What’s YOUR next step?

Q – I have a baby/ toddler and would like to start cycling with them around York

A – Get advice and information on best ways of travelling with tots from our friendly team at any of the events.

You can get started now with information and advice from Sustrans and Cycling UK online. And why not also join the wonderful Family Cycling UK Facebook group?

A – Try one of our #travelwithtots bikes out at a Bike Curious Tryout session in April or cake confidence at Cycle Heaven on the last Saturday of every month. We have a range of bikes (for adults and children) and front and back child seats, single and double trailers and a box cargo bike for you to try. Also balance bikes for young ones to have a go on!

A – Get some confidence training yourself or as a family, either during a cake confidence session or separately from City of York Council’s Urban Skills training team.

A – Borrow bikes for all the family (adult and child bikes available) and child-carrying equipment as above for 3 weeks for free as part of the cake confidence scheme (£10 deposit required).

Q – I’d like to start making more journeys with my older children – to school, for leisure and other regular journeys

A – Join an easy Family Social Ride in April to find out some of the best routes around town!

A – Get your family bikes safety checked by Sustrans, Dr Bike at Haxby Road Primary Academy events in April so you know all your bikes are safe.

A – Visit the Sustrans Travel2School stall at Haxby Road Primary Academy to buy discounted equipment such as quality bike locks and lights so you know your bikes will be secure and ready for wherever you take them.

A – Come on a bike maintenance workshop in April so you have no worries about fixing a roadside puncture!

A – Ask us to pair you up with a bike buddy, who will show you the best ways to get around and about in York. Just email

Q – I’d like my children to start cycling their own bikes and/ or independently

A – City of York Council offers balance bike sessions for toddlers and Bikeability training for older children through schools – more details at

You can also try GoGet Riding– a York-based cycle training organisation – which offers chargeable cycle training for children of all ages.

Q – I’d like to meet other cycling families

A – Come down to one of our Cycling Families events in April!

B – Enjoy a Walk Cycle Festival event during Summer Half Term – choose from a Community Party with Dr Bike and cycle activities for children, an evening Family Ride and BBQ, and a Paint a Mural Ride. More details shortly…
